Founded in 1986 by Jerry and Janie Murrell, Five Guys started as a carry-out burger joint in Arlington, Virginia, offering hand-formed burgers cooked to perfection on a grill and fresh-cut fries cooked in pure peanut oil.

The Murrell family perfected their simple system and expanded their business, adding four more restaurants with sit-down seating to accommodate their growing clientele. In 2003, they began offering franchise opportunities and sold options for over 300 units in just under 18 months.

Today, there are almost 1,700 Five Guys locations worldwide, serving fresh ground beef and using only peanut oil.
