Description

At Eastern Rice Dumpling, we celebrate the rich history of the traditional Chinese delicacy, the rice dumpling.

This delectable treat dates back to ancient China and was created to honour Qu Yuan (340-278 B.C.), a revered poet and minister who tirelessly advocated for his state and its people.

Despite facing opposition from the King of Chu and subsequent banishment, Qu Yuan continued to express his concerns for his country and people through his poignant poetry.

His tragic suicide in the Mi Luo River led to a beautiful tradition; to honour his spirit and prevent fish from consuming his body, the people threw steamed rice wrapped in reed leaves into the river.

This act marked the birth of the rice dumpling, which has since become an integral part of Chinese culture and tradition.

Fast forward more than 2000 years, the rice dumpling continues to be enjoyed as a memorial to this patriotic poet.

It is customary to indulge in these delicious delicacies during the Dumpling Festival, but they are also savoured throughout the year.

The humble rice dumpling stands as a symbol of Chinese heritage, a testament to the enduring legacy of Qu Yuan, and a constant reminder of our shared history and cultural roots.
