Since 1989, The Original Vadai has been serving the best Prawn Vadai in town. We are proud to be specialists in our field.

Our journey began as a family-operated business, selling our signature Prawn Vadai alongside other local snacks. The driving force behind our venture was our mother, Mdm Jumana Rani, who invented the unique recipe for our Prawn Vadai - fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

The traditional Vadai, originating from India, is a savoury treat made from lentils. Known for its coarse texture and rich Indian spices, Mdm Jumana Rani decided to adapt this recipe to better suit the palate of Singaporeans. The result? Vadais that are light, fluffy, and bursting with flavours in every bite. This innovative twist led to a snack enjoyed by Singaporeans of all races.

In the late 80s, Mdm Jumana Rani introduced her version of prawn vadais at the Geylang Ramadan bazaar. With the support of her husband and siblings, she set up a stall and started selling. The new product was well-received by the local Malay community and soon, word spread rapidly. It became an eagerly anticipated yearly affair, with everyone looking forward to getting their hands on it during the fasting month.

In the early 2000s, we expanded our reach by joining the night market that travelled around Singapore. Despite the challenges, it allowed us to bring our Vadais to a wider audience. We moved around Singapore for 20 years, gaining customers through Facebook, until the pandemic hit in 2020.

Fortunately, we had just managed to set up a stall at Golden Mile Food Centre in time for Ramadan Month. While outdoor events were halted, many of our customers sought us out at Golden Mile Food Centre to place orders for delivery.

Today, we have multiple shops in the east and continue to expand. Our family manages The Original Vadai, with our mother still preparing some ingredients. Over the years, this recipe has been perfected and evolved to encompass even more original Singaporean flavours. Our Vadais are uniquely Singaporean and cannot be found in India or Malaysia! This classic snack is the perfect teatime accompaniment and almost no festive occasion is complete without Vadais on the menu.
