Description

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar is a well-known establishment that has gained recognition as a hidden gem. It has become synonymous with Japanese sushi rolls, attracting a consistent queue of eager patrons. Despite its popularity for sushi rolls, the restaurant offers an extensive selection of Japanese cuisine that rivals some Izakaya spots.

While the menu has remained somewhat fixed, Koh Grill & Sushi Bar continues to innovate. A notable addition is the Shiok!!! Maki Gen 2, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to introducing new and exciting dishes. Beverages include hot/iced green tea, canned drinks, and a small variety of Japanese alcohol such as Umeshu, Sake, and Junmai.

Some visitors have mentioned inconsistent standards at Koh Grill & Sushi Bar, particularly regarding the Shiok!!! Maki Gen 2, which may not live up to the original version. As first-time diners at the restaurant, we opted for the acclaimed Shiok!!! Maki Gen 1. This sushi roll features eel, avocado, and seared salmon, expertly prepared with a torched smoky note and a housemade sauce that adds to its "shiok" factor. The combination of flavours, along with the perfectly packed sushi rice and creamy texture from the avocado, made it an exceptional dish during its heyday.

During our visit, we also tried other dishes like the Tofu Hotplate, Sake Sashimi, and Nasu Miso Yaki. While some dishes were fairly ordinary, such as the Chawanmushi, others missed the mark, like the excessively liquidy Nasu Miso Yaki and the overly tangy Tofu Hotplate. However, the Sake Sashimi stood out with its generous portions of thick-cut salmon, offering good value for money.

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar may excel in certain dishes while showing room for improvement in others. This dynamic could explain why the Shiok!!! Maki Gen 1 remains a standout favourite. While we may not rush back to try other dishes, we would definitely recommend the Shiok!!! Maki Gen 1 and Sake Sashimi to friends who plan to visit.
